Arthur Boyd was one of our most noted Australian painters of the 20th century. His modernistic technique helped lift the art of the time from the perceived ‘backwaters’ in terms of international trends to the world of contemporary style. Boyd came from a well-established family of painters, ceramicists, architects and designers. His grandparents, parents, his siblings, his wife and his children all have been involved in artistic pursuits and have lived around Victoria. Having been raised in a semi-rural area near Melbourne, he moved to England to raise his children and then re-established his home in Australia at Nowra, NSW.
Boyd helped develop a contemporary group of artists around Melbourne who named themselves “The Antipodeans” – which also included Charles Blackman, David Boyd, John Brack, Robert Dickerson, John Perceval and Clifton Pugh. They were interested in keeping the figurative traditions of art alive, and were opposed to pure abstraction. The work from these artists form part of our cultural history of the twentieth century.
He is remembered as one of the foremost painters of our time, a true visionary whose unique style places him firmly within our Australian cultural history.
Arthur Boyd – Man of Two Worlds shows the life and work of Australian artist Arthur Boyd. Filmed at his home in Nowra, NSW, and at his cottage in Suffolk in England. The program is structured around paintings from each of the changing periods of his life.
Entry is by way of donation, $5 per person, or $3 for members of the Friends of the Gallery, payable at the door.
