Sri Chinmoy (1931-2007) was born in India and is most well known as a philosopher, musician and sportsman, but he was also a prolific poet, artist and author. He felt creative pursuits represented a positive way of spreading peace to the world. He learnt to meditate for up to 8 hours when he was still a child in India and applied this skill when painting or drawing.
Imbued with colour and positivity and his exhibitions aim to inspire and uplift the viewer. Birds were his favourite motif. From 1991 to 2007 he drew 16 million, entitling them “Dream-Freedom-Peace-Birds.” He viewed them as messengers of peace and freedom. “The bird,” he said, “knows no boundaries. It is a messenger of peace and freedom, born in the garden of the soul and taking flight in the heart.”
