Periclesian Habitats

Well-known Australian artist, Leon Pericles’s exhibition Periclesian Habitats opens at the Collie Art Gallery 6pm, Friday, 6 October 2017.

Born and educated in Western Australia, Leon completed fine art studies at Perth Technical College and Curtin University in Perth during the late 60s and followed with post-graduate studies at the Birmingham Polytech, UK in the early 70s.

Leon Pericles is well published, has won many awards through his career and held numerous solo exhibitions throughout Australia and overseas. His work is held in all Australian state galleries, the National Gallery and private collections around the world. In 1989 the Western Australian State Art Gallery honoured him with a retrospective exhibition of his prints entitled ‘20 years of Printmaking’.

Leon creates fictitious environments based on a remote country town. Many of his works have some wit, whimsy and social comment around his mythical town of Widjimorphup. Several works are about or around the theme of life and happenings in rural habitats.

A fascination for the old and beautiful will find Leon in auction rooms and antiquarian bookshops pursuing interesting objets d’art. Music is an intrinsic part of his life, which is punctuated by activities such as windsurfing, diving, or tending his exquisite garden. Whenever possible, the Pericles family travel – often to far-flung favourite camping spots or to exhibitions in other parts of the world.

Leon is acclaimed nationally and internationally and has held many solo exhibitions throughout Australia and overseas since 1969. His work is held in numerous major public and private collections. His witty and unique views of Australia, combined with his outstanding talent have earned him the reputation of being one of Australia’s most prominent artists.

Periclesian Habitats is on show at the Collie Art Gallery 10am – 4pm, Thursdays to Mondays, until 12 November 2017.
